Himalayan Plants - Aeschynanthes peelii
This print is one of a series of illustrations made for J. F. Cathcart of the Bengal Civil Service in 1855. The plates were executed by W. H. Fitch and analysed by the famous botanist J. D. Hooker. The following is an excerpt from Hooker's description.
“This splendid species inhabits a greater elevation and cooler climate than any other known to me. It used to grow on the lofty trees of the Jillapahar, behind Dorjiling, before the forests were so thinned that the situation became too exposed for it. It is at the same time one of the most brilliantly coloured species known, the peduncles, pedicels, bracts, and flowers being of the same vivid red colour, and the leaves a deep glossy green above, and pale beneath. ”
