Vertical flat filing storage was introduced in the 1890's in US libraries and offices. These vertical filing cabinets apparently used technology that was patented or licensed by the Library Bureau beginning in 1892, but that technology was probably developed for card catalogs. By 1911 Vertical flat filing practically supplanted all other systems such as Pigeon hole filing, Document & Letter filing, etc.
